Monaco International Yacht Show

After visiting the Monaco Yacht Show for the first time, Jason and Kane have arrived back in the office with plenty of good inquiries, and business to follow up on. The show focuses on nothing but the big end of town, and Australia is now on the radar for many owners and skippers, looking for new locations to cruise and undertake refits. A big happy birthday to Kane also who celebrated his 40th while in Monaco.

Superyachts Vision For Azzura Marine Crystallised

Azzura Marine has just announced that approval has been granted for the construction of superyachts and large custom vessels at the former State Dockyard site in Newcastle, New South Wales. This state-of-the-art facility will offer new build constructions and other marine services to both sail and motor yachts, up to 50m in length and weighing up to 400 tonnes. They have already received interest for new build constructions including a 60m shadow vessel, a 42m motor yacht, as well as interest in building vessels under licence for a world-wide leading superyacht manufacturer. Azzura Marine will begin moving their design team and other business components on to the site in late 2007 with construction of yachts to commence by early 2008.

Aussie Built ICAP Leopard smashes Rolex Fastnet Race record

Leopard, the Australian built Farr-designed 100 foot supermaxi yacht owned by Mike Slade, smashed the Rolex Fastnet Race monohull record. Sailing in brutal seas and winds of up to 40 knots, which forced 186 yachts to retire from the race, Leopard completed the 608 mile course in just one day, 20 hours, 18 minutes and 53 seconds, beating the previous record by an incredible eight hours and 50 minutes. To spice things up Mike Slade and his Kiwi adversary Neville Crichton, owner of Alfa Romeo, placed a wager based on which of the two yachts will be the first to cross the finish line in Plymouth. As they retired from the race, Alfa Romeo will be donating £5,000 to the Ellen MacArthur Trust, which gives children suffering from serious illnesses the opportunity to go sailing.

Queensland Government to Fund Superyacht Study

Acting State Development Minister and Member for Cairns, Desley Boyle, said in statement that her government would provide about $30,657 to The Super Yacht Group - Great Barrier Reef to fund a study. Boyle said that there is "confusion" around issues like visa requirements, taxation and customs for owners. "There seems to be confusion about exactly what's required in terms of visas for crews working on superyachts," she said. "We've also heard that there is confusion about the tax implications of charter work while superyachts are here. And there have been complaints that customs procedures differ from port to port." Boyle said that researchers will contact individuals involved in the superyacht industry across the state to get an accurate picture of the issues. "Then we can have a firm basis to know what changes need to be made and by whom and thereby boost the industry even further," said Boyle.
